FAQ’s

I don’t want anyone to see these photos! How do you protect my images? What’s your discretion policy?
While our hope is that you feel so empowered by and proud of your photographs that you’ll want to share them with others, we absolutely understand the need for privacy. You can rest assured that your images will NEVER be shared without your permission. Your images are retouched in-house and never outsourced to an editing company which could leave them vulnerable to being stolen. You’ll see them directly during your in-person photo viewing appointment.

In the event that you are super proud of your images and permit us to feature you on our website, your real name will not be used and you will not be tagged on Facebook, Instagram, or Pinterest. We’re excellent secret keepers and value your privacy above all else.

We’re also happy to sign a NDA agreement should you need one because of your profession or public visibility.

I’m not comfortable with being photographed nude or nearly nude, but I really want to work with you! Is that a possibility?
Yes, absolutely! Our specialty is photographing people as they are, and we strongly emphasize comfort. People who shy away from being photographed nude or in lingerie may be more comfortable doing a studio session with an off the shoulder blouse and jeans and that’s absolutely okay! This would fall more under beauty portraiture which is definitely in our wheelhouse and something we love to photograph!
What should I wear?

This is the most popular question we get! The answer is easy – whatever you feel comfortable in! Once you’ve booked with us, you’ll receive a detailed guide on how to prepare for your session, which will include wardrobe suggestions. Our signature style is simple and classic, which are things you probably have in your closet already. Bodysuits, oversized sweaters, cropped sweatshirts and high waisted panties, robes, sleep shirts, or button-ups… you get the idea. Some clients choose to wear lingerie, and some clients choose to be nude for some of their photo session. During your session, you’ll typically have time for 3 “looks” or outfits (and nude counts as an outfit). Don’t stress too much about it, because whatever you bring, we’ll get amazing images.

REMEBER: this is about your natural, authentic beauty and whatever you choose to wear or bring will only compliment that!

Do you photograph men?
Absolutely! We believe that all bodies should be celebrated and will treat you with the same respect and care we would treat any of our female clients.
Will you use my images on your website or in your portfolio?

We would love to share your images and testimony, with your permission! At the end of your photo reveal session, we’ll be sending you a feedback card. In addition to wanting to hear how we can make sessions better for the future, at the bottom of that card is a permissions release. Most clients are so proud of their images that they give us full discretion to use their images on our website and social media accounts, but some clients prefer to limit our use to anonymous images (or images without a face) in any galleries, or prefer to choose what images can or cannot be used. We’re happy to honor any wishes you have regarding sharing. If you have any other questions that are not addressed above, please email info@jkernphotography.com. are for your session!

What are your hair and make-up artists experienced with? Can I choose to do my own makeup?
Our artists maintain an extensive hair and makeup kit to expertly work with all skin and hair types. If you have skin sensitivities or allergies, or if your hair usually takes longer than average to style, we can still absolutely accommodate you. Let us know when booking so we can have the proper tools on hand and block out an appropriate amount of time for you.

Each session includes hair and makeup and we’d love for you to take advantage of the extra pampering, but if you prefer to do your own hair and makeup, let us know at booking and we’ll adjust your package and give you some photography-specific tips to consider while you prepare for your session!

How should I prepare for my session?

Before your session, you’ll receive a Session Prep Guide in your email. All of these questions are answered in this guide, including how to prepare your face, body, and mind for your photo shoot. Inside is a complete list of resources for beauty appointments, wardrobe suggestions, and a list of things you may not have considered. We pride ourselves on providing a full experience for each client, so we will absolutely provide as much information and instruction as we can.

Read more about the experience here.

Can I bring someone with me to my session?

Absolutely! We want you to feel comfortable and if that means bringing your best friend with you, we’re all for it! We do ask that you bring someone who will provide overwhelming support and not interfere with your shoot. Think more “yaaaaas girl!” and less “let me just…”. It’s our job to fix small details and direct your poses, so bring a friend who is more of a cheerleader and less of a coach. We don’t allow more than one person to accompany you in your session, but we do allow you to book back-to-back sessions so you can enjoy the experience together!

How much can you “edit out”?

Our general policy is that while we make your skin look its best, we keep the “Photoshopping” to a minimum and rely on posing and angles to downplay any physical concerns you may have. Our post-processing workflow is focused mostly on contrast, skin softening, and sharpening rather than body morphing. We will edit out minor blemishes or flaws and reduce the appearance of under-eye circles. When it comes to retouching, we strongly believe in a less is more attitude.

Every client has a different opinion on retouching, and we can assure you that we handle each case on an individual basis. If you request scars or stretch marks to be retouched, please let us know at your photo-reveal appointment and we will absolutely accommodate you.

The images on your website are very tasteful and pretty, but what if I wanted to get a little more...um...risque?

We are happy to photograph you however you are comfortable, including images that may be a little more risque – within reason. In your consultation, we will talk about what exactly your goal is for your images and your session to make sure our sessions are a good fit for you. This very rarely is the case, but we do reserve the right to refuse service if the request makes our team members feel unsafe or encourages anything that may put our clients in danger.
